Halloween is a great time of the year for children. But what if your job is scary due to the threat of lay-offs or outsourcing? What’s even scarier is the idea of not knowing when the ax is about to fall. So it’s very important for you to protect yourself and your career. In this age of social media, you’ve got to learn to promote your own best interests. The good news is that there are many easy and low cost ways to do this.
Do you have an updated profile on LinkedIn? This is the Facebook of the working world and, just like Facebook, it is free to use. So get your profile out there and be sure to have any incoming messages linked to an email account that you check regularly. Because you just never know when a recruiter, like me, just may knock on your door to offer a treat. No response is the quickest way to kill that opportunity. And if your resume is on Monster (boo!), be sure to make updates at least once every 90 days otherwise most recruiters will consider you a passive candidate and will likely not bother to look at your old, dusty resume. And for up-to-the-minute job news, you’ve got to be on Twitter. Have you tweeted lately?
